I’m Large and in Charge or Duck,Thar She Blows!

There is so much going on with my body I’m just spinning.  My muscles from the waist down go into lockdown mode anytime I lay down.  My superfun pittingedema (say it fast 3 times-it sounds like a Mexican dish) comes and goes, weeeee!  And, the lump that is in the middle of my neck.  Oh man.  We thought it was the beginning of a goiter.  That’s one of the side effects of the new medication that I’m taking.  I was sooo worried that I was going to have a Seinfeld size goiter.  Did you see that episode where Elaine is supposed to be volunteering, helping this old woman and the woman has a goiter the size of a football and she can’t look at her??  Yep.  I feel like it’s that big.  Well, I went to see my PCP.  He examines me.  He feels the lump.  He says, “Uh huh.  It’s fat.”  And I’m like, are you f-ing kidding me?  And he says no, I’m not f-ing kidding you.  Except we both say the f word.  Me because I’m in shock.  I CANT have fatneck!!!!  And him, I think so as to be cool, and be on my side in case I go batshit and start freaking out.  I did a double take in the middle of my ranting when I heard him say the f word.  Doctors don’t do that?  Anyways, I am positive that my stomach is the size of a Thanksgiving turkey because of ascites.  After my legs going tree trunk on me because of edema, I read a ton on it and you can get fluid in your abdominal cavity.  The biggest percentage of this happening is from liver failure, which he is testing me for, but occasionally people with lupus can get it.  He said it was ‘strange’ for me to put on 50 pounds in 2 and a half months.  He is also testing for Cushing’s syndrome. I started reading on that and it sounded too much like me so I stopped for a while.  I’ll read more on that later….  Yeah!  I’m scared.  I feel like I’m just going to keep getting bigger and bigger until I’m floating up to the ceiling…I know I get totally irrational.  But my stomach has never, e v e r been this large and I’ve had 2 kids.  I look ridiculous.  I don’t know what ascites or Cushing’s would mean for me.  I hope and pray my liver is ok.  I have been on steriods for too damn long with this disease.  I don’t know, I’m a wreck.  I think ice cream and a nap with help… 🙂

Until next time~Michelle~

~Check out the monthly animation I have on the bottom left side of the page.  It took forever to get the shot where you can see the trees through the growth on the branch.  When I had to downsize it to fit it on the blog, it makes it harder to see.  Trust me, it looks really cool when the shot is larger.~

  1. Did they ever figure out what was causing this? I have the exact same symptoms and I have gained 40 pounds in 2.5 months. My skin is so tight, and people keep thinking I am pregnant. My doctor says it’s the prednisone, but this seems really extreme!

    1. Hi Whitney,
I do have Cushings Syndrome. That is the cause of the basketball tummy and fatneck. It is caused by my ‘prolonged’ steroid use. I’ve been on prednisone for over 2 years. There is a test that they can do to make sure, you should ask your doc to check you for it. The water retention didn’t have anything to do with the Cushings, it was unknown. I’ve blown up with water retention a couple of times since then.
Here is a site that exlpains a lot about the testing for it. Good luck and come back and let me know how your doing!

  2. Hope you are feeling better soon. This is like a roller coaster ride for you. I am sorry that the cycle never ends. I just found out that in additon to RA, I have fibromyalgia. Most people, you and me and everyone with any of the conditions we have, know that none of these conditions come alone, It is just one after another. Hang in there. I am praying for you.

  3. Oh good lord.

Sadly, I’m right there with you honey, but it is not a fun place to be.

I’ve been having funky liver read out for months – and actually they told me I had hep B for a while, which it turns out I don’t (and speaking of, boy did I worry a lot of people unnessicarily, hah!) – and its never been really resolved. When you gain weight so fast, like we do with pred, it can cause NASH (that is, fatty liver) which is just a stupid side version of hepatitis – not virial, not autoimmune, just stupid.

I sincerely hope you don’t have cushings, but if I’m not mistaken, there is treatment for that. And if it’s secondary cushings related to pred, the effects are often somewhat reverseable (if not all the way?). I know myself, my ugly little buffalo hump has decreased since I got down to 15 milligrams of prednisone.

That said, few things have hurt worse than seeing the phrase “patient appears slightly cushingoid” in doctor’s notes.

I hope this mess gets sorted out soon. Be strong though! I’m sure you can weather this storm!!

  4. OK we are going to have to stop this stuff now. This “WBS” Weird Body Symptom crud is too much for one person to handle. Now if you’re going to take over for me, fine, but we can’t do this together. It’s either one or the other. At least we keep our doctors working for their money.

Seriously, I hope they find out what is wrong and get you all better soon.

Talk to me! :)
